The Bretagne Classic is the great end-of-summer one-day race in Brittany, long known by its old name, the Grand Prix de Plouay. First run in 1931, it laps a hilly Breton finishing circuit packed with short climbs, in front of some of the most passionate crowds in French cycling. The repeated hills wear the bunch down, and the winner is usually a strong classics rider rather than a pure sprinter. Sean Kelly won here in the 1980s, and the race has long been a fixture of the late-season calendar. No single rider has dominated it, a sign of how open the finish tends to be. It remains one of France's most important one-day races.
