The Clásica de San Sebastián is the Basque Country's great one-day race, run through some of the most cycling-mad terrain in the sport. First held in 1981, it comes soon after the Tour de France and rewards riders who arrive with three weeks of racing in their legs. The route climbs steep Basque ascents like the Jaizkibel and the Murgil before dropping back to the coast at San Sebastián. Marino Lejarreta won it three times in the 1980s, more than anyone. It is a climbers' Classic, often won by a Tour rider still carrying top form. The roadside crowds make it one of the loudest days of the summer.
