Liège–Bastogne–Liège is La Doyenne, the old lady, the oldest of cycling's Monuments, first run in 1892. It is the climbers' Classic, a long, cold day through the wooded hills of the Ardennes, decided on punishing ascents like the Côte de la Redoute and La Roche-aux-Faucons. Eddy Merckx won it five times, a record that has stood for half a century, with Moreno Argentin and Alejandro Valverde close behind on four. The race rewards endurance and timing above all, since the hills come late and the strongest rider usually wins. Tadej Pogačar added another Liège to his collection in 2026. It is the most prestigious of the hilly Classics and the hardest to fluke.
