The Mosselcross is raced on the low meadows of Grembergen in Dendermonde, and for five winters it was one of the muddiest rounds of the World Cup. The ground drains badly, and in the wet the lap became deep ruts and standing water. The first edition, in December 2020, went ahead in Storm Bella, and Wout van Aert beat Mathieu van der Poel by almost three minutes, with Van der Poel calling the course unworthy of a World Cup. Van Aert won again in 2021 and January 2025, but the December 2025 edition was dry and very fast, and Thibau Nys took it in a sprint against Tibor Del Grosso. The race now moves to October to open the HG Cross, when the organiser expects firmer ground, and the local sponsor Borremans gives each winner a haul of mussels. As the first televised cross of the Belgian season, it is an early measure of form.
