Diegem is the night race of the Christmas holidays, held between Christmas and New Year in a village on the edge of Brussels close to the airport, under floodlights. The tight lap runs through village streets and a park, crosses the railway on a bridge, climbs to a sand pit and takes in a short wooded section. First run in 1975, Diegem was part of the Superprestige from its first season, and Roland Liboton's eight wins remain the record, one more than Mathieu van der Poel. The 2022 edition, the first after two years lost to the pandemic, drew about 20,000 people to see Van der Poel, Wout van Aert and world champion Tom Pidcock. Van der Poel went clear in the sand and Pidcock attacked later, but Van Aert caught both and beat Pidcock on the final lap. Raced under lights in the last days of the year, it is one of the most popular evenings of the cyclocross winter.
