A short mountain stage held entirely inside Andorra, and the hardest day of the opening week. It is only 105 km but carries more than 2,600 metres of climbing, and it opens with Port d'Envalira, the highest paved pass in the Pyrenees at close to 2,400 metres, climbed straight from the start. What follows is shorter and much steeper, Coll de Beixalis at around 8%, then Coll d'Ordino, then the final ascent of Alto de la Comella above the capital. The finish is back down in Andorra la Vella rather than on a summit, which rewards a rider willing to attack early and descend well. Compact mountain stages are almost always raced flat out, and the first serious GC gaps should appear here.
