Gavere, also known as Cyclocross Asper-Gavere, is raced on the wooded slopes above the Scheldt beside Grenier castle, one of the hilliest courses of the winter. Climbs and descents of up to about 80 metres run through woodland that turns to heavy mud in the wet, which the organisers call a war of attrition. Racing on or near the site dates from 1955, and Gavere was a Superprestige round from 1983 before joining the World Cup in 2022. Sven Nys won here nine times. On Boxing Day the race has belonged to Mathieu van der Poel, who has won all four World Cup editions. In 2023 he attacked on the opening lap and Wout van Aert chased him for seven laps without closing the gap, finishing 36 seconds down. A win in Gavere on 26 December is earned in the mud and on the climbs.
