World Cup Ostrava takes the series to Dolní Vítkovice, the ironworks in the Czech steel city of Ostrava, where iron was made for some 160 years until the last blast furnace was tapped in 1998. It is now a protected monument and hosts the only night race on the World Cup calendar, under floodlights. The lap of roughly three kilometres runs between the furnaces and coke ovens, with a steel staircase that riders climb with their bikes on their shoulders and a deep sand section in the heart of the works. Czechia has a long cross tradition, from Radomír Šimůnek's world title in 1991 to Zdeněk Štybar's three. Whoever wins the first edition opens the roll of honour at the most unusual venue of the season.
